US immigration reform in the balance

Thousands of undocumented Irish, who have been hoping for major immigration reform in the US, are considering returning home after new legislation affecting their legal status hit obstacles last week.

Democrat Senator Ted Kennedy said he would press ahead with a version of the new immigration bill that he and Republican Senator John McCain cosponsored last year, despite Kennedy’s aides saying that McCain’s recent withdrawal of support meant that it was less likely the bill would be passed this year.

The bill will allow an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants, most of them Mexicans, to gain legal status in the country....
