The US government has denied reports that it was willing to release top-level Taliban leaders held in Guantanamo Bay to facilitate peace talks in Qatar between the insurgent group and the international community.

A report in the Guardian last week, citing sources "familiar with the talks in the US and in Afghanistan", said secret negotiations between US officials and the Taliban had been ongoing for over a year.
