Thousands of Irish families are trapped in properties that no longer meet their needs, and are unable to move elsewhere due to negative equity and an ailing property market.

Figures from a recent Central Bank report suggested that up to half the mortgaged properties in Ireland are in negative equity, meaning that many Irish homeowners face outstanding mortgages greater than the value of their property.
