An examination of college accounts has revealed that close to €8 million was paid out by the country's top universities in unauthorised allowances to senior academics.

The probe, by the Higher Education Authority (HEA), found that the total paid to professors and other lecturers is €2 million higher than was previously believed.

The revelation is contained in a letter from Brigid McManus, secretary-general at the Department of Education, to the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee (PAC)...
