Unemployment hits 14.4 per cent

The unemployment rate in the third quarter rose to 14.4%, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office.

The unemployment rate in the third quarter rose to 14.4 per cent, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office.

On a seasonally-adjusted basis, employment fell by 1.1 per cent (quarter-on-quarter). Irish employment levels are now down 16.2 per cent from their peak at the end of 2007.

Although construction employment continues to fall on an annual basis (down six per cent), there were larger declines in education, agriculture, forestry, fishing, accommodation and food services.
