In 1820 the whaler Essex out of Nantucket was attacked and sunk by an aggressive sperm whale in the South Pacific. It inspired Herman Melville's classic American novel Moby Dick, but the story of the crew of the Essex was even more grotesque than the final movie image (it's not in the novel) of the dead Captain Ahab bound to the whale, his free arm seeming to beckon his crew.
