Pat Leahy, this newspaper's Political Editor, might easily have begun his two-part series **Crisis - Inside the Cowen Government (RTE 1)** with the opening line of Charlie Haughey's 1980s belt-tightening speech: "I wish to talk to you this evening about the state of the nation's affairs and the picture I have to paint is not, unfortunately, a very cheerful one . . ."
