A powerful earthquake that hit central Chile yesterday morning caused tsunami warnings to be issued for the south Pacific, Asia, Australia and central America.
The quake hit around 115 kilometres north-east of the city of Concepcion, but its force caused damage to buildings in the historic capital of Santiago over 325 kilometres away.
The death toll was 78 as of yesterday evening, but this was expected to rise when access to blocked roads and power lines was restored.
