Time to rethink attitude to repossessions
It might be unpalatable to say it, but it would be better for all concerned if certain borrowers with no hope of repaying their mortgage arrears sold the family home
On Tuesday, Fianna Fáil launched its proposals to protect the family home from repossession. Its policy seeks to put the protection of the family home at the centre of the state’s approach to mortgage arrears.
This objective echoes the Fine Gael/Labour Programme for Government, which says: ‘‘A more radical approach [than the recommendations in the Cooney Report] is needed to protect families in fear of losing their home.”...
