The Department of Social Protection is receiving about 1,000 applications a day from parents seeking financial support in advance of the new school year.

With primary school students only starting their school holidays, parents under financial pressure are already planning ahead for September.

About 10,000 parents have already lodged applications for financial support under the government's annual Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, according to new figures.
