Thousands of cash-strapped families who need money from the government to buy uniforms or shoes could have to wait another month for payment, despite many schools re-opening this week.

Thousands of cash-strapped families who need money from the government to buy uniforms or shoes could have to wait another month for payment, despite many schools re-opening this week.

The government's annual Back to School Clothing and Footwear Scheme is available to parents on certain social welfare payments, as well as those whose income falls below certain thresholds. A budget of €49 million has been allocated for the scheme this year.
