Depression and/or suicide are a reality for many people during Christmas. Here, author Anne Enright talks of her past struggles with those feelings.

Ispent an amount of time in my twenties feeling suicidal. I have written about it since. And regretted writing about it - public life is a bit of a bear pit. "Cue the nervous breakdown," as one journalist put it, as though my falling apart was the most boring and predictable thing in the world.

But, you know, the whole business of dying or staying alive was too important to me not to mention, sometime...
