One of the finest moments in the history of Irish sport came on a sparkling Barcelona morning in August 1992, when welterweight boxer Michael Carruth won our first Olympic gold in 36 years. Yet what few people remember is that, as well as fighting the world's best on his way to glory, Carruth was also battling severe pain throughout most of the Games.
