Thomas Hampson is a heart-throb in the classical music world, whether he likes to accept that accolade or not - and he probably doesn't. He stands 6'4", has JFK-esque good looks and exudes the sort of solidity that America expects of its folk heroes.

Descriptions have included ''indecently gifted'', ''Hampson by name, handsome by nature'' and ''matinee idol magnetism'', but these hardly matter to a man who insists he is just ''a singer of songs''.
