The tech sector in 2013

The coming year will bring major developments for the Irish technology sector, but will also see it facing some serious issues, writes Dick O'Brien.

Near the end of last year, the communications regulator ComReg, announced that it had auctioned off the spectrum for the next generation of mobile phone licences, a technology that is commonly dubbed 4G.

Four operators - Vodafone, O2, Meteor and Three - paid an initial €482 million to ComReg for the licences, with a further €374 million to come in follow-on payments, to provide a grand total of €855 million for the state coffers. This...
