Oatfield is Ireland’s oldest and biggest confectionery maker and, due to the recession, the demand for traditional treats is growing, writes Amy Rose Harte

It may not look as quirky as Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory from the outside, but Oatfield Confectionery is still a pretty mysterious place. Plumes of smoke swirl from the many chimneys of the sprawling brown-and-mustard edifice on the corner of busy DeValera road in Letterkenny, Co Donegal.
