There seems little point in denying it any further: we are in a recession. Obviously, it was impossible to foresee this ever happening to us. If people did know that Ireland’s booming economy couldn’t keep growing forever, they really should have said something.

Still, there’s no point playing the blame game now, particularly as Bertie Ahern has resigned as taoiseach and Brian Cowen is no longer minister for finance.
