The quest for public funding

The latest review of funding for public service broadcasters has renewed a long-running debate over the future of the sector, writes Michelle Devane.

RTE: as it stands, only RTE and TG4 can be considered for public service broadcasters' funding.

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) is in the midst of reading submissions from RTE's commercial rivals to its five-yearly funding review of public service broadcasters.

The objectors don't have long to wait to see whether their suggestions have been taken on board. If they are, it would lead to significant changes in the sector.
