The operating cost problem
The key issue in the health service is getting value for money - and a big problem is the high cost of surgical procedures here, writes Oliver O'Connor.
"Large increases in public health spending are projected in the advanced economies over the next 20 years," according to an IMF staff analysis. There seems to be a general consensus that ageing, obesity, costly technologies and chronic diseases will add big costs for taxpayers.
The IMF analysis also says: "The projections suggest that the outlook is grim in the United States, but also in Europe, where the fiscal challenge posed by health spending is sometimes underestimated."...
