Although divorce was only introduced in Ireland in the mid-1990s, one out of every six marriages now ends in divorce. Over 3,400 couples divorced last year, according to court statistics published earlier this month.
The number of couples divorcing is now 25 per cent higher than it was in 2000. The number of divorce applications is substantially higher than the number of divorces granted.
Over 4,100 couples applied for a divorce last year.
