My uncle, Virgil Profane, met Eamon ‘The Dev’ de Valera in a pub in 1933 to discuss the future of the so-called Irish Free State which, as Virgil pointed out to him, was still neither Irish nor free.

In the following extract from his memoirs, which obviously can’t be published while Ireland remains unfree and not at peace, Virgil recalls rowing with The Dev over the direction his new Ireland was taking.
