Garret FitzGerald was born in Dublin in 1926. His father Desmond was a founder of Cumann na nGaedheal and the first minister for external affairs in the Free State government, formed after Irish independence from Britain in 1922.

Educated at Belvedere College and University College Dublin (UCD), he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1946, and later returned to complete a PhD, which he was awarded in 1968.
