It’s impossible to quantify the real cost of the bailout

There were so many figures being bandied around last week - the cost of the bank bailout, the exchequer deficit, borrowing requirements - that we could all be forgiven for finding the whole thing a little confusing.

We may have little clarity about the future of banking in Ireland as the country’s biggest bank heads for state ownership, but at least the numbers are now getting out there about the cost.
