The four-minute mile and the pinball blizzard

A star sporting lot in London next month is Roger Bannister’s black leather running shoes, worn when he broke the record for the four-minute mile, running it in three minutes, 59.4 seconds on May 6, 1954.

Bannister began the day of the race sharpening his spikes and rubbing graphite on them so they would not pick up too much cinder ash at the London hospital where he worked as a junior doctor.

They are expected to fetch between £30,000 and £50,000.
