The resignation of Gavin O'Reilly as chief executive of INM brings to an end almost 40 years of O'Reilly family control at the media group, writes Samantha McCaughren.

Tony O'Reilly was a powerful force at the helm of Independent News and Media (INM) for over 30 years when, in early 2006, a fly landed in his ointment in the form of Denis O'Brien. The pair had a history as rivals in the telecoms sector, but in the early days, it was not clear what O'Brien was up to.

It must have made O'Reilly a little uncomfortable, but at that stage it was difficult to imagine...
