The master of Ireland's busiest maternity hospital warns that limited resources are putting the lives of mothers and babies at risk, writes Fiona Kelly.

It's not often that the gardener's helper becomes the head boy, but that's just one of the many distinguishing features of Dublin's Rotunda Hospital. Pace the corridors of Ireland's busiest maternity hospital with its master, Dr Sam Coulter-Smith, and you'll find everyone - from hospital porters to past masters - has a cheery greeting for the towering man in the white clogs who's known simply as 'Sam'.
