The late, great Alan Davidson was a former British ambassador whose knowledge of food was truly staggering.

He was responsible for the encyclopaedic Oxford Companion to Food and published the legendary North Atlantic Seafood in 1979 when still working as a diplomat.

Food writer and broadcaster Derek Cooper accurately described this book as ‘‘a catalogue, cookery book, universal aquarium, gazetteer, compendium and social history’’.
