The Bell of the ball scores a bullseye

The Market House in Monaghan is a splendid example of an obsolete building put to good use.

The oldest structure in Monaghan town, it was built of local grey limestone in 1792 by Samuel Hayes, a talented amateur architect.

In 1999, Orna Hanly Architects were commissioned to refurbish it and the austerely elegant interiors are ideally suited to its new life as a contemporary art space.
