You might be forgiven for thinking that a novel purporting to reinvent the witticisms, insights and whimsies of Socrates, Aristotle, Simone de Beauvoir and Ludwig Wittgenstein must either be a work of incredible genius, or one of career-wrecking foolhardiness.

I f Minds Had Toes i s neither, but then again, it doesn’t seem quite sure what it is - though it does seem pretty clear about which section of the bookstore it’s destined for....
