A man goes to a doctor and tells him that he's depressed; that life is cruel and unbearable. The doctor says treatment is simple. ''The great clown Pagliacci is in town. Go and see him, and that will pick you up. The man bursts into tears. ''But doctor, I am Pagliacci.

The cliched story of the sad clown from the eponymous Italian opera has never been so appropriate. Robin Williams's death by suicide last Monday...
