Taxpayers may escape credit union bailout

The Department of Finance has distanced itself from claims that Irish credit unions will need a bailout of hundreds of millions to save the sector from mounting bad debts.

The Department of Finance has distanced itself from claims that Irish credit unions will need a bailout of hundreds of millions to save the sector from mounting bad debts.

A spokesman for the department told The Sunday Business Post that Minister for Finance Michael Noonan will be bringing forward a strategy to strengthen the sector within weeks, but that there were ways of addressing its problems without spending taxpayer money.
