A major Garda operation was put in place to escort tunnel-burrowing equipment from Dublin Port to Erris in Co Mayo for the Corrib gas project, with the costs borne by taxpayers.

A major Garda operation was put in place to escort tunnel-burrowing equipment from Dublin Port to Erris in Co Mayo for the Corrib gas project, with the costs to be borne by taxpayers.

Between 40 and 60 gardaí are understood to have been drafted in for the operation, which began at nightfall at Dublin Port, following notification from Shell that a four-lorry convoy would be making its way from there to Erris.
