The National Taxi Drivers' Union (NTDU) has accused local authorities of shirking their responsibility to approve a request for a 50 cent surcharge to offset the rising cost of petrol.
Tommy Gorman, spokesman for the NTDU, claimed local councils were “passing the buck'‘ to the taxi regulator, Ger Deering, who is not allowed to levy a fuel surcharge without a public consultation process. The regulator's fare review is not expected to be completed until next year....
