The Garda Tapes inquiry is expected to establish whether gardai­ tipped off Real IRA leader Michael McKevitt about a planned raid on his home.

The issue was investigated by the Smithwick Tribunal, which concluded last year that an IRA mole in the garda station in Dundalk tipped off the gunmen who murdered two senior RUC officers in 1989.

But it had never been able to obtain a copy of the tape in which Real IRA...
