Tallaght consultant claims hospital is unsafe for patients

The emergency department at Tallaght Hospital would ''have closed long ago if health watchdog Hiqa had closure powers, a consultant working in the emergency medicine at the hospital has said.

The emergency department at Tallaght Hospital would ''have closed long ago if health watchdog Hiqa had closure powers, a consultant working in the emergency medicine at the hospital has said.

''Hiqa can close nursing homes but not hospitals. If Hiqa could close hospitals, the emergency department would have been closed down, said Dr James Gray.

He said the country's busiest emergency department (ED), which sees about 80,000 patients a year, was ''unsafe.
