Waiting lists for some medical procedures, such as oncology and neurology, are shorter in the public system than through private treatment.

A survey by The Sunday Business Post revealed that the waiting times for public and private patients were often the same or only marginally different for other specialised treatments.

Senior hospital consultants questioned the value of private health insurance, which was traditionally seen a means of treating patients more quickly.
