Surgeons' leader calls for rethink on consultant salaries

The president of the Royal College of Surgeons has called on health minister Dr James Reilly to review the consultant contract and restriction on private practice.

The president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) has called on health minister Dr James Reilly to review the consultant contract and restriction on private practice.

RCSI president Professor Paddy Broe said regular theatre closures in public hospitals meant highly trained surgeons were being under-utilised, yet restricted from working in the private sector. He said surgeons were frustrated and that the problem was exacerbating the brain drain of non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs).
