Vital pieces of technology for the latest microchip from Sun Microsystems were developed at the company’s Irish base.

The new microprocessor, which Sun claims is the ‘‘world’s fastest commodity microprocessor’’, was officially launched last week. Associated systems are due for release in the coming weeks.

In a statement, Sun Microsystems said: ‘‘The processor is not developed in Dublin, but key pieces of the firmware controlling its virtualisation...
