Thomas Hobbes, that 17th century soundbite man, invented the phrase “nasty, brutish and short'‘.
It comes from his 1651 treatise Leviathan, a vision of society based on a contract between the ruler and the ruled, motivated by a desire for economic welfare - with all power devolved to a chosen sovereign. Modern politicians, one suspects, would like a little more of that action.
