The Department of Health will initiate a review of its €1 billion agreement with pharmaceutical manufacturers for medicines in the coming weeks.

The moves comes amid concern over the high price of medicines and mounting pressure on the health budget.

The three-year existing agreement was finalised in October 2012. It included a clause that allowed for a mid-term review.
