A politically divisive row for the government over the selloff of state assets has been temporarily diffused following the McCarthy review’s advice that there should be no fire sale of any assets this year.

But a day of reckoning on which semi-states should be included in the €2 billion sell-off agreed in the Programme for Government still awaits the coalition.

The notion of selling the ‘family silver’ is anathema in the Labour Party...
