Spanish jobless rate hits 24.4%

Spanish unemployment has hit a new record high, official figures showed today.

The number of unemployed people reached 5.6 million at the end of March, with the unemployment rate hitting 24.4 per cent, the national statistics agency said.

It's the highest rate in the European Union and it is expected to rise further.
