Stunning architecture, world-class museums, lively nightlife, stellar restaurants . . . you name it, and the Spanish capital Madrid is bound to have it, writes Susan Campbell

Think of Spain and you’ll probably think of the Costas, the destinations of choice for many Irish sun seekers.

But Spain is about much more than overdeveloped coastlines and tourist menus, and since most Irish people live in urban environments, a city break allows amore direct cultural comparison.

An obvious contender would be Barcelona, with its architectural splendours and celebrated nightlife; or Seville, the cultural centre of southern Spain. Madrid may not immediately...
