When Margaret Beckett was summoned to prime minister Tony Blair’s office in May20 06 and told that she was to become Britain’s first woman foreign secretary, her response was brief and to the point.

‘‘Fuck!” she observed to the amused prime minister.

Profanity is not exactly unknown in the political world, of course, and Beckett is said by friends to swear ‘‘regularly and vividly’’.
