Snowbound engineer receives €40k for sacking

An engineer who was sacked after failing to come into work for two days during the heavy snow in January 2010 has been awarded €40,000 compensation for unfair dismissal.

An engineer who was sacked after failing to come into work for two days during the heavy snow in January 2010 has been awarded €40,000 compensation for unfair dismissal.

Shane Berkley of Knockmore Crescent, Tallaght, Dublin 24, was sacked by Rotate Food Equipment of Jamestown Road, Dublin 11, after a disciplinary hearing.

Berkley, who was represented by barrister John McGuiggan, told the Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT) that he had begun working as a service engineer for Rotate in 2007.
