The ‘smiley' celebrated its 25th birthday last month. The device, used by texters worldwide, started life as a colon-and-bracket combination in 1982.

They are now used in e-mail and instant messaging communications as emoticons.

“In terms of users of Windows Live Messenger, the ubiquitous smiley face is part of the daily life of over 270 million worldwide and you can understand why,” said Brian Kealy, marketing manager at Windows Live Services Ireland.
