Slowly building our way out of housing crisis

Social housing investment is a step in the right direction, but wider housing market sustainability is still challenged writes Conor O'Donovan.

Budget 2015 measures, including the €2.2 billion multi-annual social housing capital investment scheme and the Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) scheme extension, are welcomed, but the lack of direct measures to boost private housing supply in the short term remain a concern.

One of the key priorities for the government in Budget 2015 was to address the critical shortage of social housing and to introduce measures to support the 89,000 people estimated to be in need of social housing.
