The health service is losing €300 million every year as a result of absenteeism, according to Department of Health documents seen by *The Sunday Business Post*.

The daily rate of absenteeism for last year is estimated at almost 5 per cent.

In addition, the cost of paying incremental pay increases to workers in the health sector next year is put at about €35 million, though it is not specifically provided for in the spending estimates.
