Benicio Del Toro frequently taps dark urges to bring compelling characters to life, but his latest role – a werewolf – was inspired by the movies of his childhood in Puerto Rico

Benicio Del Toro is pacing a room in the Merrion Hotel, Dublin, patting the pockets of his charcoal-black suit jacket. The 42-year-old Oscar-winner is looking for his cigarette lighter, and once he finds it - with an ‘‘Aha!” and a beatific smile - he folds his six-foot frame into a plump sofa and squints his already hooded eyes through a curl of smoke.
