What with the Christmas Day whiteout and this week's gales and floods, I've spent more hours in the garden than I usually care to at this time of year.

What with the Christmas Day whiteout and this week's gales and floods, I've spent more hours in the garden than I usually care to at this time of year. It is the first time I can remember having to shake snow off the Brussels sprouts before picking them for Christmas lunch.

There is nothing like severe weather to focus attention on the importance of getting the nuts and bolts of gardening right.
